Extra pumps headed to stricken Russian boat

From Yahoo! 7 News: More water pumps will be rushed to the crew of a stricken Russian fishing boat stranded in Antarctica as they battle to stay afloat while waiting for rescue ships to arrive, officials said Tuesday. The nearest vessels are still several days away and are being hampered from reaching the Russian-flagged Sparta because of thick ice in the frozen Southern Ocean.

The crew have attached mooring lines to the ice to give the ship greater stability and are managing to pump out water at the speed it is coming in, but New Zealand rescue officials said they need more pumps and fuel.

A “Solid” Solution to Pump Selection

From Pumps & Systems: Tests show that solid-body plastic pumps are the best choice for oscillating applications.

The demands that oscillating-displacement pumps place on their materials of construction are extreme due to the constant alternating stress to which they are subjected. In contrast to rotating machines— such as centrifugal pumps, where the load builds gradually when the machine is started and then remains constant—the components of an oscillating machine (diaphragm or piston pumps) are subjected with each single discharge stroke to continuous alternating stress between the maximum delivery pressure and the maximum vacuum in suction operation.

Energy-saving water pumps being ignored by builders

From the Sierra Vista Herald: Last year the city implemented a code change to encourage builders to install a technology that effectively conserves water and energy, resulting in significant savings to home owners.

The problem with this is nobody’s doing it,” Planning Administrator Don Brush said, during a meeting of the Environmental Affairs Commission this week. Out of 147 building permits issued since Dec. 9, zero on-demand hot water pumps have been used in new construction even though city code was amended to explicitly allow them at no extra cost.

The topic is: Redefining Repair as a Failure of Maintenance - Using Life-Cycle Asset Management to Minimize Repairs and Maximize Plant Efficiency.

Here are the details from Pumps & Systems' website:

He’ll provide industry benchmarks for equipment reliability and best practices in maintenance that organizations use to achieve those levels. Tom will explain other elements of an asset management strategy that lowers life-cycle costs, including organizational structure and the importance of job planning.
Supported by case studies from a variety of industries, Tom will give attendees actionable advice they can use to improve pump reliability, lower repair costs, and move closer to the goal of zero equipment failures.

An example of such a project is the Elbe pump station renovation for which we designed and built two diesel driven BA-C600 pump units in sound-attenuating canopy. After supply and delivery, BBA's Nol van der Liende visited the jobsite in Brandenburg (Germany) and took these fantastic pictures, and that is not just our opinion either!

After publishing these pictures on our website they were entered in an online photo contest and subsequently awarded the title for "best pumping application photo 2011" by the online voters! Choosing a pump - An article by Colfax Fluid Handling

From Colfax Corporation Blog:

Colfax Fluid Handling published an article in BioMass Products and Technology entitled, "Choosing a pump". Here are a few excerpts:

"When evaluating pumps for biomass applications, we recommend approaching pump selection from a holistic viewpoint. Several different types of pumps, including positive displacement and centrifugal, can be used in the process as the materials are broken down and converted. Ideally, a pump supplier should be chosen on its ability to offer products that match the specification requirements, as well as knowledge of how the pump interacts with the system and materials."

"The physical properties of the material and aggressiveness through the system also have a significant impact on the pump. Pump materials and coatings, shaft seals and the operating point should be specifically adapted to the pump and system. Be sure to communicate the material and system properties to potential pump suppliers."

Lawrence Pumps Selects Certeon for WAN Optimization Deployment at 25 Percent Lower TCO than Other Leading Vendors

From BusinessWire: New data creation within global enterprises will increase at rates of more than 60 percent per year (IDC, 2010) for the remainder of this decade, yet over 90 percent of organizations’ employees have to use latency hampered WAN links for accessing this new centralized data. Lawrence Pumps Inc., an industrial pump manufacturing leader for critical industrial services, recognized this user productivity challenge and selected Certeon’s software WAN optimization product, aCelera, to give the organizations’ employees the ability to access their data as if it were on their desktops. aCelera is the linchpin solution for Lawrence Pumps’ growing data access issue.

“When it came time to open a new office in India, we started exploring other WAN Optimization options and found that Certeon’s solution was 25 percent less than the cost of the Citrix Branch Repeater”

Lawrence Pumps is using Certeon’s aCelera software to replace a hardware WAN optimization product from Citrix because Certeon is 25 percent less expensive and provides superior performance as a software solution. Also, Lawrence Pumps is licensing Certeon aCelera using an OpEx-budget based model, freeing them from traditional WAN optimization vendor pricing approaches that require large upfront CapEx expenditures associated with a perpetual license model.
