Success in An Ethylene Plant

From ThomasNet: GRAPHALLOY® significantly improves the operation of pumps in difficult applications. Its advantage is demonstrated by its success in an ethylene plant in a Texas refinery.

Ethylene is a very light hydrocarbon that creates problems in pump operation. Because of its low viscosity, ethylene provides minimal lubrication to the rotating parts of the pump. As a result, these pumps are prone to failure. The ethylene service pumps in this particular Texas refinery were failing two to four times a year at an average cost of $75,000 per pump. These pumps were19-stage vertical pumps operating at 3560 rpm.

Finance: Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum (OLV), an ISO9001 certified company, offers vacuum pumps, research coating systems, leak detectors and related components for use in Photovoltaic manufacturing. Our process experiences include vacuum generation for supporting crystal pulling and casting of silicon, deposition of thin-film coatings and lamination for today's solar modules.

OLV recently announced the introduction of a second generation industrial dry-compressing screw-type vacuum pump line called DRYVAC®. The new DRYVAC has evolved from one design platform comprised of models 650 S, 650 S-i and 5000 RS-i. Multiple pumping system combinations are also possible for gaining increased pumping speeds and vacuum levels by incorporating the RUVAC® WH line of vacuum boosters. Both DRYVAC and the RUVAC WH offer improvements in leak tightness, energy efficiency and physical stature over competitive brands.

Peristaltic Pumps Well Worth Their Salt

From Web4Water: Whilst other pump designs become subject to costly maintenance and part replacement, Verderflex peristaltic hose pump users can enjoy trouble-free production and low running costs.

One customer to benefit was a Spanish salt producer. When this company expanded its production in 2009, it chose to install a range of Verderflex peristaltic pumps to enhance its process.

Although salt is the primary product, the raw material from which it is extracted also contains silica as well as mud and other minerals. These sodium silicates have a wide use, from food preservations and water treatment through to automotive engine repair and fire protection.

New on Pumps & Systems - Impeller Balancing: An Important Element of a Quality Repair

New article on the June issue of Pumps & Systems - Impeller Balancing: An Important Element of a Quality Repair.

Impeller balancing or, more correctly, pump rotor balancing is an important element in any quality pump overhaul. Balancing pump impellers and assembled rotors is a straightforward process, but a few "gotchas" can result in poor final balance quality. The step is too often skipped because it is assumed that the impellers were balanced at the factory. Whether you are a pump end user, service technician or rebuilder, this discussion of balancing procedures, tolerances and tips may help you get that perfect pump instead of one that is just "okay."

Diaphragm Dosing Pumps are chemical resistant

From ThomasNet: Integrating 2-phase stepper motors, type FEM 1.02 and FEM 1.09 pumps achieve flow rates from 0.2-20 mLpm and 0.9-90 mLpm, respectively. Compact pumps measure 62 x 75 x 63 mm, cover wide dosing range (1:100), and can serve for more than 10,000 hr. Leak-tight units are self-priming to 8.5 in. Hg and demonstrate 1% repeatability. Depending on pump version, head materials include polypropylene or PVDF, while internal elastomeric components are manufactured from EPDM, FFPM, and PTFE.

Rugged line of pumps for tough water treatment chemicals from AquFlow

From Yahoo! News: Sodium Hypochlorite, Ferric Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide, Hydrochloric acid etc. are the chemicals that are commonly used as disinfectants, coagulants, corrosion Inhibitors and neutralizing agents in a typical water treatment plant. These chemicals could be very corrosive if the right material is not selected for the liquid end of the injection pumps causing premature failures and down time.

AquFlow has a fully developed line of pumps that was started in 1972 as Hydroflo. The range of materials available for liquid end in these pumps includes 316 Stainless Steel, PVC, PVDF, Hastelloy C, Alloy 20 and PTFE. When a pump is correctly matched to ensure chemical compatibility and accurate flow, the water treatment process becomes more dependable.

Flowserve wins an order of plug valves for a desalination plant in Australia

From Yahoo! Finance: Flowserve, a leading US based pumps maker, received an order of plug valves for a desalination plant in Australia. As per the order, the Australia’s Southern Seawater Desalination Plant, located near Perth, will use Flowserve’s manual and automated Durco PlugSeal valves for its high-pressure processes.

Perth has been experiencing shortage in rainfall resulting in declining water level in its local reservoirs. This situation, if continues, is expected to result in an annual water shortage of approximately 150 billion liters by 2031. The plant is designed to give an output of 50 billion liters of potable water annually, with the ability to expand to 100 billion liters.
