Metallurgical High Vacuum Debuts 'Torture Tank' to Assure Peak Pump and Blower Performance

Until now, most replacement vacuum pumps were tested under actual conditions only when they were first connected to a customer's heat treating chamber. Now, Metallurgical High Vacuum puts their new and rebuilt pumps and blowers through their torturous "stress test" at the factory to assure performance under pump-down conditions.

As Geoff Humberstone, MHV President, comments: "We have always done a blank off test and a 20-24 hour run-in on our pumps. While this is good, using the pump to evacuate a vessel of known volume is the real acid test.

Tetra Pak and Braskem sign agreement to pilot green plastic in carton packaging

Tetra Pak has reached agreement with the largest Brazilian petrochemical company, Braskem SA, to purchase limited volumes of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) derived entirely from a renewable feedstock.

The agreement represents the first move toward using green polyethylene in the carton packaging industry. Braskem expects the world’s first commercial-scale green polyethylene plant, located in the south of Brazil, to come on stream late next year and is targeting first deliveries to Tetra Pak early in 2011.

The new facility will use ethanol derived from sugar cane to produce ethylene, which will then be converted into polyethylene, the world’s most commonly used plastic. It is estimated that the process will result in an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when compared with the traditional process for manufacturing polyethylene.

Revolutionary AODD Pump Energy Savings Device Announced by Proportion-Air

From ThomasNet News: Daniel E. Cook, President and CEO of Proportion-Air, Inc. announced the introduction of the new MizAir® energy savings device for Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pumps. The product will save up to 50% of the energy used by AODD pumps.

AODD pumps use a tremendous amount of compressed air to operate and are notoriously inefficient. The most effective way to make AODD pumps more energy efficient is to better manage the air they consume. The obstacle has always been that no two AODD pumps are the same, making it nearly impossible to design a product that consistently works. Until now.

New Pumps & Systems live webinar

"Advances in Simulation of Pumps & Cavitation" - June 25, 1 PM EST. Sponsored by Simerics, Inc., and VibrAlign.

This FREE Webinar will demonstrate the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to predict flow dynamics and cavitation in a fluid pump. The demonstration will begin with CAD geometry of a real-world production pump and then will explain how to use the CFD tool, PumpLinx, through real-time model and simulation set up to provide information on flow, pressure and aeration with cavitation.

Finally, results will be compared to physical test data. Through modeling and simulation of a real pump, the attendee will understand the fundamentals of CFD from model setup to post-processing in this high-impact, one-hour session.

You can register HERE to the webinar.

Blackhawk Develops Advanced Electric Piston Pump to Ease Maintenance in Tough Applications

From ThomasNet: Blackhawk Technology Company, the industry's leading manufacturer of severe-service piston pumps and supplies, has developed a technologically advanced design for its electric top-head-drive pumps to make servicing and repair easier in difficult locations.

"The Anchor Electric's positive-displacement piston pumps put the electric motor and controls outside of the well, tank or sump, not down with the liquid being pumped," said Mark Bertane, Blackhawk president. "Inlet clogging is eliminated, and servicing is performed safely and easily above the wellhead. No pump pulling is required, and working parts are on the surface, making them easy to service."
